How to Prepare Your Quilt

The three layers of your quilt will be loaded on the machine independently of one another. Please do not pin or baste them together.

The batting and backing, on ALL sides, should measure at least 4-6 inches bigger than your quilt top.

Quilt Top

  • Press seams well. Be sure the top lies flat. Ripples and "puffy" places will not necessarily quilt flat.
  • The top should be free of embellishments such as buttons and beads.
  • Clip all loose threads and be sure the seams have been pressed.
  • A row of stay stitching, applied ¼ inch or less from the edge of the quilt, will prevent stretching.
  • If your quilt has a definite "head," and you think I might not recognize it, please apply a piece of masking tape to identify it.
  • Please complete the order for to include with your quilt.  This will provide me with information on how I can reached you (name, mailing address, phone number, e-mail).  Don’t forget to include your choice of quilting design or any special instructions.  I always call or e-mail my clients before I begin a quilt.

Backing/Batting
Batting & backing need to be 6-8 inches larger than the quilt top.  Backing must be squared and selvages removed from any seams that will be quilted over.  Squared backing will have both sides the same length, with 90-degree corners.  Selvages, especially in a backing seam can cause undesirable pulling and lead to puckering along a seam.

Binding
If you wish me to do your binding, please send one yard of fabric if you would like me to cut and apply binding. I will cut 2½ inch straight grain binding, apply by machine to the front, turn, and hand stitch on the back. Corners will be mitered.
